Sossusfly Excursion

Sossusfly Excursion

This is our most popular day-trip. The flight covers about 630 km of which less than 20% could be seen if traveling by road. This scenic delight discovers the ancient desert deep in the heart of Namibia and the southern Skeleton Coast from the air. Tourists often regard this flight as the highlight of their holiday. This early morning flight from Swakopmund takes you over the mesmerising Namib Desert, the Kuiseb riverbed and Kuiseb canyon with spectaculat contrasting colours and past the Desert Ecological Research Unit of Gobabeb. Onwards to Tsondabvlei, the only known breeding area of the Lappet faced Vulture in southern Namibia, towards the Sesriem Canyon. Landing at Sesriem you will be driven in a 4×4 vehicle to the highest shifting sand dunes in the world at Sossusvlei. No part of the desert is visually more stunning than Sossusvlei. The warm tints of the sand range from pale apricot to brick orange and deep red, vividly contrasting with the large white clay pans at some of their bases. Admire, climb and photograph the scenery and enjoy refreshment in the shade of a camelthorn tree. When you are ready, return to Sossusvlei Lodge at Sesriem for lunch. After lunch transfer to Sesriem landing strip. We continue our flight via Sossusvlei the highest shifting sand dunes in the world. From Sossusvlei into the Diamond Restricted Area flying over the remains of three old diamond camps and crossing the coastline.

Experience description

We depart with the rising sun to arrive at Sossusvlei Lodge at 8 am to beat the heat of the African sun. On the way, we admire sights of the Swartbank Mountain with its black striated lines. We also pass the Gobabeb Training & Research Centre, internationally recognised for research on the desert ecosystems in Namibia. Next up is the Kuiseb Canyon where two famous geologists went into hiding for two years during World War II. If Lady Luck is on your side, you might see some zebra and oryx along the ridge of the canyon.

Before you know it, we will have reached our destination – Sossusvlei – from where a 4×4 will take you to discover (and perhaps climb?) some of the world’s highest dunes. A walk to Deadvlei with its petrified camel-thorn trees is also well worth it. We depart with glorious memories from Sossusvlei Lodge and fly over the exact sands where you have just left your footprints. Next up are abandoned diamond camps and numerous shipwrecks until we reach the awe-striking Sandwich Harbour. As we near Swakopmund, we fly over Walvis Bay and the cotton-candy pink salt lakes.
