Fish River Canyon Excursion
When the continent Gondwana separated from the supercontinent Pangaea, the African continent lifted and resulted in erosion of which the deepest point measures 549 metres deep today. Welcome to the Fish River Canyon – the result of mesmerising geological formations over billions of years.
Today it is famous for being the largest canyon in Africa, and the second largest in the world after the Grand Canyon in Arizona. If you are an avid hiker, this is the place to be. Hiking is a major drawcard in the cooler months from April to September. The canyon is part of the Ai-Ais Richtersveld Transfontier Park that stretches into South Africa.
Sossusvlei Excursion
As the largest conservation area in Africa, the Namib-Naukluft National Park has many highlights – the ultimate of which, for many travellers, is Sossusvlei. Renowned for its swirls of burnt-orange sands that form some of the highest dunes in the world, Sossusvlei is also home to Deadvlei. Scorched camel-thorn trees against towering dunes and an immaculate blue sky, make for splendid photographic opportunities.
Sossusvlei is a combination of the Nama word “Sossus” meaning dead-end, and the Afrikaans word “vlei” meaning marsh. This used to be the end destination of the Tsauchab River some millions of years ago until the life-giving source changed its course and left the marsh to dry up and turn into a salt and clay pan.
Epupa Excursion
Long before travel was a leisure activity, before cars, planes and other convenient means of transport, large parts of the world remained undiscovered. Today, one of the world’s last untouched wilderness landscapes with its nomadic people is found in the Kaokoland in Namibia. No Namibian adventure is complete without a visit to a Himba village. This gives tourists the opportunity to become acquainted with the semi-nomadic tribe’s fascinating lifestyle.
The Himba culture is one of the world’s last semi-nomadic cultures. Although their lifestyle is challenged by the lack of space in a modern world, the Ochre People – slender, graceful and mesmerising – still migrate after seasonal rains and green pastures following the pattern of their ancestors since time immemorial.
